Looking for ideas for wedding readings? A Bespoke Poem could be the answer.

Speaking in public is something that many of us find scary. Add in the sheer significance of the occasion and it’s easy to see why wedding readings can be a real worry for people. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, then this article is going to be a real help. We’ll cover the key things to think about when you’re choosing a reading, how to make your wedding reading personal, and how to bring something a bit different to your  wedding day.

Choose a wedding reading that is personal to you as a couple

The reading you select for your wedding day is your chance to express your love for each other, and celebrate the magic that makes your relationship unique. Your reading can be funny, serious, tender, moving – perhaps all of these at once. You may wish to include favourite lines from a song or film, passages from books you both treasure, or keep things simple with a fun round-up of your very own love story.

Choose something unique

A quick google search will bring up a host of wedding readings. Whilst there’s nothing wrong with taking the off the peg approach, choosing to create something that is truly unique means you have a memory to cherish long beyond the day itself.

How many wedding readings can I have?

Many civil ceremonies allow for two readings, whilst religious ceremonies allow for three which is expected to include one from the Bible.  This gives you plenty of scope to include something that is perhaps family tradition, as well as something that is personal to you.

Think about the theme for your wedding

If you have chosen a particular theme for your wedding, then your wedding reading is an opportunity to forge a link between your ceremony and the rest of your day.  You could choose a nature driven poem for a woodland wedding, or a rock and roll song lyric for a vintage bash. One of my favourite bespoke wedding poems was written for a couple who cherished the Danish concept of hygge. They were keen that their wedding reading poem reflect these values, as well as their love of fairy tales! The poem was a perfect match to their passion and personality, and one of the highlights of their day.

Think about who will be reading at your wedding

When you’re choosing your reading, it’s important to think about who’ll take on the task. It’s usual to choose a special friend or family member and many people consider it a huge honour to be asked to read at such an important occasion. This doesn’t mean they won’t feel nervous! Choose a reading that will be easy for them to read. It’s wise to avoid anything with super-complicated language and structure – even the most accomplished reader can get tongue-tied when face with a gathering of expectant guests.  I write all my wedding poems with the reader in mind, so the words will flow with ease.

Personalised wedding poetry brings a unique touch to your day.

Bespoke poetry for wedding readings

One of the things I hear most when talking about personalised wedding poems is “what a great idea – I’d never thought of that”. I’m always thrilled when I see the relief as people realise that how a bespoke poem can make their day that bit less stressful. It’s easy to imagine that getting a poem written for you is an expensive and complicated process. I have great news! My bespoke poetry packages are sensibly priced and my writing skills make things as simple as possible. Armed with all the details you give me I can write a poem that’s perfect for your day. I’m a small business so I have the freedom to be flexible and my passion for good poetry means you’ll have a wedding reading you can be proud of.

Can I have a wedding reading that is romantic but not cheesy?

This is another thing I’m often asked. The answer is a resounding yes. There can be a tendency for wedding poems to sound a little like an old-style greeting card. These have their place, but I know that a lot of couples want a poem that reflects their love without the fluff and nonsense. Whatever your style, I can tell your love story in a way that makes your day sing that little bit more beautifully.
